  • Tween Creative Writing Workshop: Build-A-Character
    Thursday, August 7, 2014 5:30PM
    Park Slope Library

When we read a great book, the first thing we look for is a strong, interesting, detailed, flawed main character. Would Katniss in the Hunger Games have been so fascinating if she knew she was in love with Peta all along? Would we love Harry Potter as much if his scar didn't hurt when Voldemort was around? How did Suzanne Collins and J. K. Rowling imagine their characters? How can we, as readers, relate to Katniss and Harry so much that we care if they live or die, love or have their hearts broken? The secret is that these writers created great characters. Combine a truly human character with a fantastic imaginative world such as Hogwarts or the Capital -- well, welcome to a great book. In this workshop, we'll build characters through writing about the people we know best: ourselves. Then we'll take our stories and fictionalize them, adding crazy cool imaginative details. By the end of the night, participants will have built a person to use in further stories. Who knows? Maybe the next Katniss Everdeen lies within the imagination of a kid right here in Brooklyn...Elizabeth Isadora Gold’s writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Believer, Tin House, the Rumpus, Time Out New York, as well as many other publications. Elizabeth lives in Brooklyn with her husband and young daughter. Check out Elizabeth's work on her website, www.elizabethisadoragold.com and follow her on twitter at @elizisadora.
