Uncharted Terrains: the Artist's Book of Maddy Rosenberg

I am attracted to the gothic and bizarre, an affinity I believe is based on the strong influences of my Brooklyn childhood and Coney Island's Steeplechase Park. I also gather much imagery from the time I spend in Europe.

With this installation, I seek to emphasize the mysterious and haunting environments captured in my artist's books. Objects, images and architectural details are placed within a newly invented context, thereby transforming even the mundane into the strange and intriguing. Authentic classical facades mingle with 19th century New York ones. Streets are constructed from bits and pieces of historical Prague, Paris, London, Glasgow and New York. The flat, two-dimensional nature of the books explodes into the third dimension. Spaces are uninhabited, but details of a human touch remain, inviting the viewer to enter. Senses of order and proportion are challenged as the implied presence of human life and the subtly disturbing images evoke an uneasy response in the viewer, who begins to realize that things are not what they seem.

The artist's books are printed by lithography, linocut and digital means.
