"The Real and the Fantastic"
Central Library, Grand Lobby
This exhibition features the extraordinary photo-realistic paintings of Kam Mak, whose children's book My Chinatown: One Year in Poems, is the Parent's Choice 2002 Recommended Award Winner by the Parent's Choice Foundation. The paintings in the book illustrate the story of a homesick boy from Hong Kong who discovers the wonders of a new life in New York City's Chinatown. Hanging alone, the paintings seem to capture stolen moments from everyday life - with all the warmth of a boy's love for his grandmother and the vibrancy of a bowl full of bright orange kumquats!
"The images in my paintings are inspired by being part of two cultures: Chinese and American," says artist Kam Mak. "I hope they convey both the beauty and emotion of my subjects."
Kam Mak, who lives in Carroll Gardens with his family, was born in Hong Kong and raised in New York City's Chinatown. His book, The Dragon Prince, won the Operheimer Platinum Medal for the best children's picture book of 1997.
