Drawn in Brooklyn

Drawn From My Father's Adventures by Sophie Blackall

May 2, 2012 - August 24, 2012
Central Library, Lobby Gallery
Original drawings and ephemera taken from exotic, exciting and bizarre stories told to Blackall by her father, author Simon Blackall.

I have always loved my father’s stories: the grim ones from boarding school during the war, the exciting ones from being the son of a spy, the exotic and bizarre and beautiful ones from traveling to unpronounceable places long before there were guide books. I have always seen these stories as pictures and I thought it was high time I coaxed them in writing from the source and drew them.

BPL Exhibition, Simon and Sophie BlackallSimon Blackall grew up in England, traveled extensively and lived in Japan for several years before settling in Australia. He has picked tobacco, manned the hot hose in an abattoir and written comics. He has worked as a journalist, copywriter and photographer, and for the last twenty years has published fine books.

Sophie Blackall is a Brooklyn-based Australian artist who has illustrated over twenty books for children, including the Ezra Jack Keats Award-winning Ruby’s Wish, Meet Wild Boars, which won a Founder’s Award from the Society of Illustrators and a BCCB Blue Ribbon Award, the Ivy and Bean series, Big Red Lollipop, which was a New York Times Top Ten Picture Book for 2010, and Pecan Pie Baby, which won a Horn Book honor in 2011. Blackall’s first book for adults, Missed Connections: Love, Lost & Found (Workman Publishing; October 2011), began as a blog in early 2009 and continues today as a series of paintings based on real, anonymous messages posted online by lovelorn strangers.
