Beyond the Words: Author Portraits

Retrospective of Swedish artist and sculptor

Carl Köhler's portraits of international authors

From Henry Köhler, son of the late Carl Köhler (1919 - 2006) and curator of this exhibition:

During my father's career, he painted many special and unique author portraits that appeal to those interested in both art and literature. Though he was well-known by art followers in Sweden, he was not as well-known to the general public. For this reason, I believe he would have been honored to have the opportunity to display his work here in New York.

He worked mainly with painting and collage, experimenting freely with different expressions, techniques and subjects, which he found in the worlds of theatre, music, dance and literature. Using oil, acrylic, drawings and graphics, he worked in the modernist tradition. After a period of painting on canvas, he moved over to raw materials, such as masonite and plywood.

BPL Exhibition, Carl KohlerCarl Köhler displayed his work throughout Sweden. He received several cultural and art scholarships during his life, the last of which was awarded when he was 85 from the Swedish Painters Society. He studied art at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts and at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris.

BPL Exhibition, Frida and Henry KohlerFrida and Henry Köhler (daughter and son of the late Carl Köhler) have curated international exhibitions of their father's artwork at venues such as the August Strindberg Museum and the Stockholm Concert Hall within the past two years. They will curate future exhibitions at the Swedish Church in New York and the Helsinki and Turku public central libraries in Finland. Frida resides in Stockholm and Henry and his family reside in Akersberga, Sweden.
