BPL - Exhibition: Drawn In Brooklyn, John Bemelmans MarcianoJohn Bemelmans Marciano is the author and illustrator of several children's books, including Madeline and the Cats of Rome, Harold's Tail and Delilah, as well as the popular word book Anonyponymous. He earned a B.A. in art history from Columbia University. An artist and self-professed word geek, he lives in Red Hook, Brooklyn, with his wife, daughter and two cats.

BPL - Exhibition: Drawn In Brooklyn, Megan Montague Cash, Mark NewgardenMegan Montague Cash, Mark Newgarden Megan is an illustrator, author and designer who specializes in work for children. Her clients have ranged from the Museum of Modern Art to Nickelodeon, and projects have included award—winning toys, games, paper–engineered products, corporate identities and exhibit designs. She has published numerous children's books, including What Makes the Seasons?, which was turned into an exhibit at the Discovery Gateway museum. She collaborated with Mark Newgarden on Bow–Wow Bugs a Bug, which won a gold medal in the Society of Illustrators Original Art exhibit in 2007, as well as other honors. She earned a B.F.A. from Pratt Institute, where she currently teaches.

I am inspired by George Carlson, the Moomins, Paul Rand, Ruth Krauss, the Futura typeface, Crockett Johnson, Spool Pets, Dick Bruna and dessert.

Mark has had various and sundry careers as a cartoonist, including creator of novelties (Garbage Pail Kids), a graphic artist (from Raw to The New York Times); and a writer for TV, film and multimedia projects (from Microsoft to Cartoon Network). He is the author of Cheap Laffs, a picture history of the novelty item, and We All Die Alone, a collection of his comics and humor. His first children's book Bow-Wow Bugs a Bug (with Megan Montague Cash) won a gold medal in the Society of Illustrators Original Art exhibit in 2007, as well as other honors. He earned a B.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts, and he currently teaches a class there entitled Humor Clinic.

Mark is inspired by Ernie Bushmiller, Samuel Beckett, rubber vomit, Buster Keaton, the state of New Jersey and the rest of the twentieth century.

BPL - Exhibition: Drawn In Brooklyn, John NickleJohn Nickle's Alphabet Explosion! won an Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Award and was selected by Amazon.com as one of the top 10 children's picture books of the year in 2006. Things That Are Most in the World was selected for the General Mills literacy program and was selected by Parents for its Best Children's Picture Books list in 1999. The Ant Bully was released as a major motion picture by Warner Bros. and Playtone. He earned a M.F.A. from the University of South Florida.

I am influenced by Edward Hopper, Simon Bening, Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch, Tex Avery, Chris Van Allsburg, Charles Addams, the early work of James Rosenquist, DC and Marvel Comics from the 60s, and illuminated manuscripts.

BPL - Exhibition: Drawn In Brooklym, Brian PinkneyBrian Pinkney has won two Caldecott Honor awards, a Coretta Scott King Award, three Coretta Scott King Honor awards, a Boston Globe-Horn Book Award and the Jane Addams Children's Book Award. He earned a M.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts and a B.F.A. from the University of the Arts.

I am influenced by abstract impressionist art, sumi-e paintings, dance and music.

BPL - Exhibition: Drawn In Brooklyn, Sean QuallsSean Qualls won a Coretta Scott Honor for Before John Was a Jazz Giant in 2008. His book Dizzy was an ALA Notable Book, a Kirkus Reviews Best Book and a School Library Journal Best Book of the Year. His work has been featured at the Society of Illustrators Original Art exhibit in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009.

I'm inspired by my surroundings: people, places, faces, buildings, snippets of conversation, books, music, architecture, films, television, memorabilia, aging and decaying surfaces, and things of the past and future.
