Meet Erin Shaw, BCAP Director
Erin Shaw is responsible for coordinating all aspects of BCAP's educational programming. Erin received an MA in Educational Leadership from Lesley University, and an BA in Education and Studio Art from American University, along with a K-12 teacher certification. Erin has been working with kids and youth-serving organizations for over ten years, including: three years as a museum educator at the Carnegie Museum of Art; nonprofit roles as Creative Arts Coordinator, Community Youth Leadership Program Director, and Youth Development Specialist; numerous years as a teacher of art, dance, yoga, and gymnastics; and a year of service with AmeriCorps. Erin specializes in holistic youth development through community engagement in the arts and culture, and youth program management. She is thrilled to be leading the BCAP team.

BCAP Planning Committee
Each spring, BCAP's curriculum is redeveloped by a collaborative team of professional educators representing our six partner institutions. This Planning Committee insures that BCAP Adventures have a high-quality, one-of-a-kind, fun-filled learning experience. The theme for this year's curriculum is: Wild in the City: Step inside Brooklyn for untamed adventures in nature, art, and urban life!

Just ask our Adventurers and families--BCAP counselors are fantastic. Each of our camp groups is paired with a team of counselors, including one Head Counselor, two Group Counselors, and a Youth Development Intern.
Our staff represent the diverse Brooklyn community we serve. Most importantly, our counselors are fun, welcoming, and excited to be a part of the BCAP family. Most of our counselors return to work for BCAP for numerous years, and some of our counselors were even campers as kids!
Candidates for the Group Counselor position must must be at least 18 years old and have completed their senior year of high school. Most of our Group Counselors college students, studying in the fields of education, social services, arts, or sciences. They must exhibit a capacity for leadership, including problem-solving skills, positive and effective communication and an ability to uphold high expectations. They must display an ability to serve as positive role models, set firm boundaries, exercise patience and see things from a child's perspective. We look for individuals that exude the same love for learning, discovery and creation that we aim to foster with our children. They must have experience with diverse populations. Finally they've got to know how to have fun!
Candidates for the Head Counselor position must be at least 21 years of age, and must possess the same qualities that Group Counselors possess. In addition, they must have prior experience teaching a group of children, either in the classroom or the out-of-school-time setting. They must demonstrate prior effective experience in a supervisory role. Due to these standards, our Head Counselors tend to be either experienced educators, graduate students, or veteran Group Counselors who have worked at BCAP Summer Camp for at least 2 years with a track record of excellent leadership.
Counselor Credentials & Training
BCAP counselors undergo a competitive application process, including an interview, reference check, and background check. All BCAP counselors are CPR and First Aid certified, and participate in a full week of training, tailored especially for BCAP Summer Camp. This training includes topics such as: health and safety risk prevention and procedures, creating a positive camp culture, bullying prevention, disability inclusion, positive group management techniques, games and teambuilding experience, diversity awareness, and a thorough introduction to our partner institutions and curriculum. We take pride in our staff excellence, professionalism, and dedication.

Working for BCAP
Each spring, BCAP recruits a team of mature, energetic, and experienced artist-educators, counselors, and interns to join our Summer Camp and BCAPteen staff. We have a reputation of excellence, and expect the absolute best from every person on our team. As a BCAP staff member, you will receive a week of paid training, six weeks of work experience, and memories to last a lifetime.
BCAP staff receive the unique experience of working in six of Brooklyn's premier cultural institutions, giving each day excitement and variety, and making connections with the staff and collections at each institution.
We are looking for applicants with an array of professional interests and experiences, including: education, social work, psychology, science, library and information science, visual and performing arts, environmental studies, museum studies, photography, filmmaking, writing, and more.
